Twilio’s annual kickoff in 2021 was a very special event. Sir Patrick Stewart came to enlighten the team and speak about purpose. Obviously, the theme followed suit. We designed the identity around a loose Star Trek foundation and even created customizable swag for all Twilio employees.
Each year in January, Twilio holds an internal kickoff to share executive vision and priorities for the year. In 2021, the leadership team set out to imagine The Next Generation of Twilio. Knowing that Sir Patrick Stewart was a speaker, the theme was obvious. The base identity system was developed as the foundation for all downstream touchpoints. Each event leans on core tenets of the Twilio brand, yet there are opportunities to keep things fresh and exciting for the audience.

Here, you can see the website and platform application. The keynote for kickoff was shot on the identical XR (virtual production) stage as Disney+’s The Mandalorian. This production method is unique and beautiful but secondarily allowed for safe production during COVID.
The Twilio SIGNAL team developed a fantastic event experience where we allowed users to customize their avatars according to their likeness and other pop-culture references. Sean McBride led this endeavor and graciously agreed to pull it into the company kickoff experience. We then figured out how to print one-off hoodies with each Twilion’s avatar on it.
Logistically, this took a lot of work to manage. We printed over 5k unique hoodies, and they all had to be individually dropped-shipped across the globe.
